Resident stunned when HOA sends her a bill for $16,000 ! August 11, 2016
Monica Coulter received a letter from her HOA in March.
“So I’m like, what do they want?” Coulter said.
What they want is money, a lot of money !!
“I open it up and I get two coupons in it. One is for $16,000 and some dollars and the other one is for $115.77,” she said.
Coulter said as she referred to a letter she received from her HOA. Coulter’s first thought?
“I think they made a mistake,” she said.
It was no mistake. The fact is Club Monaco Condominiums, where Coulter lives, is in the middle of a $2 million repair project. Landscaping, patios, garages and painting, repairs on the 122-unit complex, including Coulters.
The FOX Problem Solvers learned every unit in the complex was billed roughly $16,000 to pay for the bill and as shocking as it might be, it’s in black and white in the HOA’s covenants.
“You’re contractually obligated to comply with them. A recorded document which is a contract between the association and every owner,” said Molly Foley-Healy, an HOA law attorney.
While it might be a bitter pill to swallow, always read your HOA’s covenants before you sign on the dotted line.
